Delaware’s basketball final four and championships will not be played at the Bob Carpenter Centre in 2020.
The move is being made out of caution, to prevent potential further spread of the Coronavirus.
DIAA sent us the following statement:
“In light of concerns about the potential spread of the Coronavirus COVID-19, this year’s Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA) Basketball Championships will not be held at University of Delaware’s Bob Carpenter Centre as scheduled for March 11-14.
“Out of an abundance of caution, UD officials decided to disallow spectator attendance at the tournament, leading DIAA to choose to move the games to new locations. UD officials said this difficult decision is rooted in concern for the safety of UD’s students, faculty and staff.
“DIAA is working to reschedule the games at new locations. The Wednesday games will be moved to Thursday, and the new schedule and locations will be announced Wednesday once details are finalized.
“Fans who purchased tickets for games at the Bob Carpenter Center will be refunded. Those who paid with a credit card will be automatically refunded within 3-5 business days
While making these decisions regarding DIAA Final Four to be moved can be hard, we are committed to making sure about the health and wellbeing of our team for events and large gatherings at UD. This promise is guided by concerns for the health and safety of the UD team, faculty and staff members. A broad range of thought goes while taking these decisions – from attendance size to place dynamics and the risk to certain populations – and relevant campus leaders will continue to inform those who are impacted. “
All DIAA semi-finals and championship games will be rescheduled to new locations with announcements expected sometime Wednesday.
