Argentina striker Lautaro Martinez was hoping to see his fellow countrymen Mauro Icardi stay put at Inter but has been impressed by the arrival of Romelu Lukaku from Manchester United.
According to Lautaro, who impressed for Argentina at the 2019 Copa America in Brazil, Mauro Icardi did not want to leave for Paris Saint-Germain this summer as he had informed those at San Siro about his desire to stay at the Italian club.
After much speculation sparked mostly by his wife and agent Wanda Nara, Icardi was grabbed on deadline day by PSG on a season-long loan.
“I have a good relationship with him and we talk a lot.
“He wanted to stay and in the talks with the club he always said he wanted to play but now he is in another team and I wish him the best because since I arrived in Italy he has been a key person that has helped me integrate better.”
Inter did not hesitate to let go Icardi as they had an option already lined up in the name of Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian was immediately brought in by Antonio Conte in a £75 million ($92m) deal and was also handed the No.9 shirt once occupied by the Argentine.
Lukaku has already started scoring for Inter, netting 2 goals in 2 matches. Martinez was all praise for the Belgian and admitted that he was pleasantly surprised by Lukaku’s stature.
“He immediately adapted to the coach’s ideas and the team’s style of play.
“He’s a striker with incredible characteristics, he’s very powerful. I was surprised by his sheer stature.”
Inter has also signed Alexis Sanchez from Manchester United on a season-long loan. This means Lautaro now has decent competition for his first-team spot at San Siro.
